Investigation of cognition on implementing basic nursing service among nursing students in private colleges and in public colleges

Abstract

Objective To survey and compare the differences of cognition on implementing basic nursing service among nursing students in private colleges and in public colleges.Methods To conduct a questionnaire survey of cognition on implementing basic nursing service in 328 nursing students in private colleges and 222 in public colleges by using cognitive status questionnaire on basic nursing service.Results The general cognition on implementing basic nursing service among nursing students in private colleges and in public colleges were in good condition,and fail rates in the two groups of nursing students were only 6.7％ and 5.9％,respectively.There were no significant difference between the two groups of nursing students in pass rate,good rate and excellent rate (P ＞ 0.05).The level of cognition on daily life nursing in private colleges of nursing students was higher than that in public colleges of nursing students.The total scores of cognition on basic nursing among nursing students in private colleges and in pubhc colleges were (79.70 ±13.15) and (78.27 ± 11.06),respectively,and the difference was statistically significant (Z =-2.343,P ＜ 0.05).The level of cognition on implementing daily life nursing was commonly lower than that on basic nursing of treatment; the cognition rate of daily life nursing,such as washing feet,combing hair,dressing,cutting nails,handling feces and urine and so on,was both less than 85％ in the two groups of nursing students; while there were statistically significant difference between the two groups of nursing students at the level of cognition on the following daily life nursing service (P ＜ 0.05),including washing feet,combing hair,dressing,cutting nails,washing hands before meals,making the bed,placing toilet,handling feces and urine and so on,which in private colleges of nursing students was higher than that in public colleges of nursing students.The level of cognition on scrubbing body and oral care in private colleges of nursing students was lower than that in public colleges of nursing students.There were statistically significant difference between the two groups of nursing students at source of students and students' first choice which was nursing (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusions The general cognition on implementing basic nursing service among nursing students in private colleges and in public colleges are not enough.The nursing students pay more attention to theory and basic nursing of treatment than daily life nursing; and the level of cognition on most of daily life nursing in private colleges of nursing students was generally higher than that in public colleges of nursing students.Nursing educators should enhance the students' awareness of daily life nursing,and guide and regulate the students' thinking and behavior.
