Abstract

It is a common understanding that coal burst can be triggered by stress waves, but its mechanism is still unclear. Based on back analysis of three coal burst cases, the damage features of coal bursts were presented. A mechanical analysis of coal burst triggered by stress waves nearby was conducted according to one-dimensional stress wave theory. In addition, impact factors and control measures of coal burst were discussed. The results show that: (1) Coal bursts can be triggered by stress waves originated from roof, floor, and coal seam. (2) Coal bursts can induce severe damage to the coal seam on the sidewall and the floor but not the roof of roadway. (3) The tensile waves at free surfaces of roadway are the reason to trigger coal burst. (4) Coal bursts can be influenced by stress waves magnitude, source location, and other factors. (5) Proper pillar design, destressing techniques, and energy-absorbed support may be used to control coal burst.
