Abstract

Bidirectional reflectance of solar radiation as a function of scattering angles from snow and cloud surfaces is found to differ markedly. The variation of bidirectional reflectance with scattering angle depends on cloud thickness. Infrared temperature data obtained from the same region are used in conjunction with these observations to provide information on characteristics of clouds located above snow surfaces. Nimbus II Medium Resolution data from consecutive orbits over Greenland on 19 June 1966 are used to illustrate how such data provide information on clouds above snow surfaces.
