Abstract

The investigation of an industrial waste should be carried out prior to or in conjunction with the design and construction of the waste producing facility. To determine the characteristics and treatability of a waste associated with a new redwood curing process, lab studies were carried out concerning the chemical and biological nature of the waste. It was found that the COD was much higher than the BOD (7,541 mg per 1 vs. 2,260 mg per 1); the organic fraction of the waste was mostly in the suspended and colloidal fraction of the waste (90%); the sample size effected the BOD determination; the Warburg method was best for measuring the BOD; the waste was easily flocculated at either high pH (~11) or low pH (~3) with resultant organic reductions approaching 90%.
