Abstract

The dwellers in the hot Saharan regions wear black coloured robes instead of white ones. The present study discovered that ∼73% of the human body heat from the centre of the body was transferred outwards through the black robe to the surroundings, whereas only 29% of the human body heat was transferred outwards when a white robe was used. The wearer of black robe is more comfortable than the wearer of white one. Also it appeared that the 'private climate' increased with the wearer of black robe, reducing the solar radiant energy transfer to the human body. It decreased with the wearer of white robe and increased the solar radiant energy transferred to the body. This further added to the discomfort when the white robe was worn.
