Abstract

The occurrence of the 9/11 attacks marked the sharp rise of the public narrative of Islamophobia in the US and the West. This backlash against Islam and Muslims came about as a consequence of a media campaign led by Fox News and the far-right media outlets, which represent the conservative socio-political agenda. This media campaign has employed translation in its negative representation of Islam and Muslims. Hence, this research applies the analytical framework of the narrative theory to a sample of Fox News episodes that include translated Islamic items such as Qur’anic verses, Sharia Law rules, and Prophet Muhammad’s Hadith in order to investigate the role of translation in this negative representation of Islam. The research applies the features of selective appropriation, temporality and relationality as they are developed by Baker (2006), being part of the narrative analytical framework. Keywords: 9/11 Attacks, Far-right Media, Fox News, Hadith, Islamophobia, Narrative Theory, Public Narrative, Qur’an, Relationality, Selective Appropriation, Sharia Law, Temporality.

Highlights

  • Since the day of the 9/11 attacks in the US, American media has been infested with anti-Islamic sentiments

  • The episodes include translated Islamic items such as Qur’anic verses and Sharia Law rules. The translation of these items in all the sampled episodes serves to portray Islam negatively. 2.2 Procedures: The narrative feature of selective appropriation is applied to the episodes to highlight how certain Islamic items such as Qur’anic verses or Sharia Law rules are selected for translation by Fox News for the aim of constructing the public narrative of Islamophobia

  • The use of the feature of selective appropriation shows that certain elements are selected for translation by Fox News from Arabic to English for the purpose of portraying Islam as a violent, backward and intolerant religion
