  • Dewi Quraisyin

For the Madurese people, Islamic boarding schools remain the main reference in looking for educational institutions. The Madurese people's trust in Islamic boarding schools cannot be separated from the influence of the kiai as founders. Kiai has the most important role in the development of an Islamic boarding school. As a founder, the kiai is the "soul" of the Islamic boarding school. Personal branding and a strong professional image of a kiai will become“buzz” in building public trust in the Islamic boarding school he leads. The founder's personal branding will have a significant impact on the credibility and level of public trust in the Islamic boarding school. This will also make it easier to attract public interest in Islamic boarding schools, as well as build wider connections and networks which will provide many benefits for the sustainability of Islamic boarding schools. Moreover, if the Islamic boarding school is a new Islamic boarding school that is competing fiercely with other Islamic boarding schools that previously existed in Madura and had a good reputation. The competence of the founder (kiai) in religious knowledge, his dedication and integrity as an Islamic religious leader, and supported by other essential abilities, will become a Unique Value Proposition (UVP) for a kiai. This UVP will form a reputation that will stick in the minds of the public as a kiai's personal branding. This personal branding will highlight the personal strengths that kiai have to build reputation, build trust, and communicate the differentiation that kiai have in developing their Islamic boarding school. Kiai will appear as the "face" of his Islamic boarding school. This "face" will appear in society so that people choose the Islamic boarding school they lead as a place of learning for themselves or their children. This qualitative research will examine the UVP owned by the founder of the Nahdlatut Ta'limiyah Pamekasan Madura Islamic boarding school, namely kiai Musleh Adnan. Kiai Musleh Adnan was previously a religious preacher whose name was widely known to the public, especially in Madura. With the ability to lecture using simple, relaxed and entertaining sentences but full of meaning and religious advice, Muslim kiai are easily accepted by the public. For this reason, this Islamic boarding school, which was only established in 2019, currently has more than seven hundred students and more than a thousand congregants attending the recitations which are regularly conducted by the kiai every week. The Role Of Boarding School In Improving Public Political Participation In The 2024 Election In Jember District
  • Sep 28, 2023
  • POLITICO
  • Baktiawan Nusanto + 1 more

This study aims to examine the Role of Islamic Boarding Schools in Increasing Community Political Participation in the 2024 Election. In Jember Regency, the Election is an effort to convince and involve individuals in the political process. This is because there are symptoms of decreasing enthusiasm for community members' involvement in the election. The decrease in community enthusiasm is caused by the lack of political influence on the lives of the wider community. Many policies issued by the government are considered misdirected and inappropriate, only certain groups are directly influenced by these policies. Therefore, in the election process, the community is convinced through campaigns to involve the community in the political process and increase enthusiasm in the implementation of the election. The dynamics of political mobilization based on religious identity cannot be separated from the role of religious institutions and religious figures. In this case, the institution in question is the Islamic boarding school or better known as the Islamic boarding school, which is a traditional Islamic religious education and broadcasting institution in Indonesia. Life in Islamic boarding schools has a different cultural and traditional system from the lives of society in general, in Islamic boarding schools the students are educated with binding regulations. Traditional Islamic boarding school (Salafiyah) students tend to be unfamiliar with all forms of problems that are happening outside, because in this case, Salafiyah students are only involved in religious activities in the pesantren environment. Salafiyah students only get religious knowledge without being accompanied by general knowledge. This condition ultimately makes those from Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools emerge as religious leaders, or they will plunge into informal sectors. Along with the development of the times, Islamic boarding schools also have another side of life that is no less important, namely politics, therefore, as we have seen so far that in every important political momentum in the history of the nation, Islamic boarding schools are always involved (Ismail, 1999). The role of Islamic boarding schools today is also very clear. The most obvious example is the difficulty of the government to popularize programs if not through Islamic boarding school leaders. Another example is the number of political leaders approaching Islamic boarding schools, especially before the general election. The behavior of these leaders is right, if they do not approach Islamic boarding school leaders, it means that their political vision is low. The influence of the kiai is not only on the students in his pesantren, but also the community around the pesantren and can even go further. The absolute authority and power possessed by the kiai is often used by political forces (political parties) to gain support from the students and the surrounding community.

For centuries, Islamic boarding schools/pesantren have been known as a place to produce scholars, community leaders and national leaders. The role of Islamic boarding schools as a leadership school is increasingly important in this modern era. In the context of pluralism and complex social dynamics, there is a need for leaders with good leadership skills supported by good morals. Islamic boarding schools with deep religious values and a distinctive education system are capable of producing leaders with these characteristics. However, there are still many questions that need to be answered regarding the role of Islamic boarding schools as a leadership school, such as: How does Islamic boarding schools apply leadership values in its curricula and daily activities? What are the challenges faced by Islamic boarding schools in producing leaders in the modern era? and how do graduates of Islamic boarding schools contribute to leadership in various sectors? The research adopts a qualitative approach exploring various curricula documents, such as daily activities and educational programs implemented in Islamic boarding schools, to answer the questions posed above. Through spiritual leadership, for example, students learn to be ethical leaders with qualities such as empathy, compassion and humility while by community leadership, Islamic boarding schools emphasize shared responsibility as students take on leadership roles, improve their interpersonal skills, teamwork and time management abilities, and learn flexibility, adaptability, problem solving and decision making.
