Abstract

This study numerically investigates the effect of variable aspect ratio serpentine cathode flow field on proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance and temperature distribution. By varying the proportion of two aspect ratios, 0.6 and 1, three modified cathode (MC) designs MC-1, MC-2, and MC-3, alongside a conventional cathode (CC) is considered. With 0.45 W cm−2, MC-2 exhibited 15.39% higher performance and 10.16 K lower temperature than CC. The transition region position, equal number of narrow and wider channels enhanced the current and temperature uniformity in MC-2. Furthermore, experimental results are consistent with the numerical results obtained from MC-2.
