Abstract

This study details digital natives and digital immigrants' digital arts experiences in creating artistic works. The importance of digital natives and digital immigrants' experiences in using technological tools, such as computers, could affect their perspectives on the creations of digital artworks, and thus may influence the development of future trends in Digital Art. The two research questions were addressed, as follows: 1) How do digital natives and digital immigrants differ in how they use software to create art? 2) What is the relationship between digital natives and digital immigrants' digital art experiences and Traditional Art experiences in creating artworks? The questionnaire results indicate Adobe Photoshop is important software which enabled the participants to incorporate their past experience in producing computer-generated images based on artist-defined tools. The two groups' respondents' use of software packages varied relying on their past creative experiences and the characteristics of the art forms in digital plays. Each group's digital arts experiences, with regard to efficient creation, authentic production of works, hyper-realistic presentation and characteristics of aesthetic form were compared with their traditional arts experiences in creating artworks. Finally, this study provides suggestions for future studies in response to the new developments of Digital Art.
