Abstract

Phospholipid scrambling is an essential process that redistributes membrane phospholipids across the cell’s bilayer. Different physiological processes involving cellular signaling rely on an appropriate distribution of the various classes of phospholipids between the two leaflets of the bilayer. TMEM16F is a dimeric calcium-activated transmembrane scramblase protein that passively translocates phospholipids along their concentration gradient. Activation of TMEM16F results in phosphatidylserine (PS) movement from the inner to the outer leaflet of the membrane.
