Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to determine compassion fatigue in the physicians and nurses working in the emergency department. In this context, this study is the first and original study on compassion fatigue of emergency nurses and physicians in Turkey. Materials and Methods: This research was conducted as a descriptive study to determine compassion fatigue in the physicians and nurses working in emergency departments in Turkey. Results: This study concluded that 73.5% of the nurses and 67% of the physicians had above average compassion fatigue. A significant difference was found between the emergency service nurses and physicians’ total compassion fatigue scores. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, it was determined that the physicians and nurses working in the emergency department had above average compassion fatigue. Timely, appropriate and effective interventions should be undertaken by emergency department managers to reduce physicians’ and nurses’ compassion fatigue levels. It may be recommended to organize training programs for effective stress management and coping strategies for physicians and nurses working in the emergency department.
