Abstract

For Ghana to ensure a continuous supply of its manpower requirements there should be a steady progression of those in school right from nursery to tertiary institutions. The institutions connected with education must work to prevent avoidable dropouts, especially at the base of the academic structure. The study was carried out in four coastal districts of the Western Region of Ghana from January 2013 to December 2014. The study among others investigated family background characteristics, proper parental and teachers' guidance, as well as educational and learning facilities. It was largely qualitative and descriptive. A total sample size of 736, made up of 96 teachers, 160 parents and 480 children was sampled for the study. It was revealed that 65% of the girls rely on their boyfriends for chop money to school. It is recommended among others that a law should be passed to compel fathers to accept the responsibility of taken care of their children.
