Abstract

This essay advocates the use of secondary sources in Islamic law in order to improve relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in predominantly non-Muslims societies. I focus on the hanafi school of Islamic law and elucidate some classical opinions derived using secondary sources which served at improving relations in previous eras. Using a principled approach from these classical judgments, I make practical suggestions for both factions in the modern era that could serve to remove the ignorance surrounding Islam’s tenets and further integrate Muslims within the communities-at-large. In the final analysis, the doors of co-existence are open granted proactive and innovative steps are taken by both sides.
