Abstract

Climate variations, also called climate modes, are coupled ocean‐atmosphere phenomena, such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or the North Atlantic Oscillation. Enhanced monitoring efforts are starting to lead to the identification of new modes of climate variability, some of which may play important roles in governing regional and global climate extremes.
