Abstract

Abstract The use of remotely controlled scanning sonar is described as a site investigation tool in cavity surveillance. Abandoned and flooded limestone mineworkings beneath a proposed road in the West Midlands have been inspected; the resulting sonar records have been tested and matched with the only known abandonment plans of the mine. The use of Sonar enables the current status of the mine, pillars, roof and rooms to be assessed thoroughly before ground improvement and stabilization take place
