Abstract

Results of inverse photoemission in the 20-40 eV range are presented for a polycrystalline platinum sample. This choice of incident electron energies avoids interference effects which can occur between the radiative emission and the fluorescence emission following the 5p1/2,3/2 core-hole excitation. The theoretical density of states based on LMTO band-structure calculations is found to describe the energy distribution curve of the unfilled states above the Fermi level fairly well.
