Abstract

Martina Haidvogl is a lecturer at the Bern University of the Arts’ media conservation program (Switzerland), and Linda Leckart is a registrar at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA). In their previous roles at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, both authors collaboratively developed workflows and worked side-by-side to quality control and catalog media artworks. This chapter draws on their respective expertise in media conservation and registration to develop a comprehensive numbering system for inventorying media artworks within a traditional collection management system. A Collection Management System (CMS) is a type of content management system that has been customized to serve museums and collecting institutions. A time-based media artwork may come with multiple information carriers containing analog and digital copies of a single artwork, sculptural installation components and dedicated equipment, and a certificate of authenticity (COA).
