Abstract
The remote Star Mountains region of Papua New Guinea is a copper province containing the Mount Fubilan deposit and ten other prospects in the Tifalmin and Nong River areas. A wide range of calc-alkaline intrusions was emplaced into Jurassic to Miocene shelf sediments contemporaneously with Plio-Pleistocene thrust faulting. Copper mineralization is present in skarns and disseminated in porphyry stocks. Many of the prospects display common characteristics which may be useful for exploration: the mineralized stocks are porphyry intrusions with biotite alteration and are emplaced at or near the base of an extensive thrusted limestone unit; massive magnetite is often a major component of the mineralized skarns.
