Abstract

Autonomous Vehicle networks are nowadays the focus of both industry and academic research. On one hand, an Intra vehicle network is not a black box; it is now allowing communication with external devices through wireless interfaces such as Wi-Fi, 3G, etc. On the other hand, the subject of Inter vehicle networks is becoming a well-established field due to its ability to expand communications between vehicles and thereby improve transport efficiency and road safety. In this paper, we present a survey on intrusion threats and current security solutions in intra and inter vehicle networks. After introducing the different architectures and characteristics, we then analyze the potential threats targeting these networks. Finally, we present the protection mechanisms currently being devised to address these problems. Special considerations are given to the now rapidly expanding subject of Autonomous Vehicles (AV).
