Abstract

It is my great pleasure to welcome the many participants to the European Law Institute (ELI) and the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law’s (Unidroit) first exploratory workshop under the title ‘From Transnational Principles to European Rules of Civil Procedure’ (17–18 October 2013). The participants have gathered over an autumn weekend, with the plenary sessions being held in the impressive building of the Austrian Justizpalast (Palace of Justice) on Schmerlingplatz in Vienna, the home of the ELI. It was an impressive undertaking to get this first meeting to happen—gathering eminent participants from the legal community from around the world but particularly of course from Europe and America.
