Abstract
The French eighteenth century provides fertile ground for contemporary writers, artists, and filmmakers, offering narratives of struggle and triumph that specifically resonate today. The essays in this special issue attest to the importance of the French eighteenth century as an enduring source of cultural inspiration deriving in large part from its foundational relationship with our modernity, and in particular modern concepts of the individual in relation to society.
