Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. This book discusses the use of therapeutic techniques such as art, story, music, and play in helping children and adolescents cope with life-threatening illness and then considers the cathartic benefits of humor and laughter and the role of pets as a source of empowerment. It examines the pain and suffering of seriously ill children and teens. Such experiences move children to another, level beyond the innocence of childhood and plunges them into life filled with uncertainty and lack of control. The book addresses the world of dying children and families whose lives are permanently changed and filled with difficult emotions and formidable challenges. The vulnerability, naivety, and inexperience of children may inhibit their ability to filter out negative, destructive information and retain information that will help them further their understanding of death-related issues.
