Abstract

Journalists and society in general maintain the myth of the power of the press and journalists. Although it is quite certain that the mass media have an influence on the course of our societies, there remains a degree of confusion between power of the media and the power of which is a faulty analysis. The first reason for this is that it is an error to refer to all journalists using the same term and thus postulating a kind of unity within the profession is nonsensical because it has never been so widely dispersed and rife with different and contradictory tensions and realities. The second reason is that even at the heart of media companies and in their relations with those who participate in the information process, journalists' influence is not the most noticeable factor. On the contrary, are increasingly faced with a situation of dispossession regarding the strength of logics of communication and economy.
