Abstract
The Symposium on Egg Shell Quality was presented August 5, 1981, at the Poultry Science Association meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. Cochairman Joe Soares of the University of Maryland presided. Plans for this symposium were initiated by the participants in Regional Project S-131 “Egg Shell Quality in Avian Species” and supported by the program committee of the Poultry Science Association.The objectives of the symposium were to provide an assessment of the problem of egg shell breakage in commercial channels and to provide recent information on the physical, biochemical, and genetic advances in research on the egg shell. The presentations were given by scientists currently engaged in research and who have contributed significant knowledge about these topics.Ken Washburn of the University of Georgia described the incidence, cause, and prevention of egg breakage in commercial channels.
