Abstract

Government regulations are not new or unique to modern society. Regulations and laws have governed activities in every society and as societies have evolved, so has the need for formal regulations to protect human health and well-being. The increasing regulation of drugs and chemicals in the United States and worldwide impacts heavily upon the poultry industry. Non-nutritive feed additives have been used in the poultry industry as long as poultry feeds have been commercially manufactured.Beginning with enactment of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 and continuing with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938, the use of drugs in the United States has come under increasing control. In 1968, the 1938 Act was amended to define the basis for the current approval process for animal drugs.
