Abstract

Abstract In the introduction, the diachronic and synchronic chains of Aristophanic reception in the nineteenth century are explored, and the territory is laid for further investigation. After a brief discussion of reception theory and the geographical and chronological scope of this monograph, Aristophanes’ British reception is traced back to the early-modern period, as is his reception in Europe and the wider British Empire. British historians’ various appropriations of Aristophanes are also explored. The state of politics in the long-nineteenth century is also set out as an important piece of context, particularly as pertains to the battles over theatre censorship and reform.
