Abstract

Marvell and Liberty takes its origin from an international conference with the same title, held on 4–6 July 1996 under the auspices of the Centre for English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. This conference, supported by the British Academy, brought together leading scholars from the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Canada, and the USA, and could be said to represent the current state of scholarship on Andrew Marvell and on the relationship between literature and its historical context in the seventeenth century.
