Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the commonalities of the migratory process as well as challenges that international migration raises for countries of origin and countries of destination. It lays out broad patterns of global migration and migration processes that explain why migrants move, where they originate, and where they land. The book presents material on state immigration control and enforcement policies, as well as the industries that spring up to facilitates both legal and undocumented migration. It introduces gender as a lens through which to better understand migrants’ motives and patterns of migration. The book addresses issues raised by migration in the countries of destination, detailing how and why the population responds to migrants via data gleaned from public opinion polls. It explores immigrant integration in destination countries, facilitated or hindered by state integration policies, as well as migrant access to citizenship.
