Abstract

This book focuses on the history of publishing in twentieth-century Ireland. It examines the history of books, the cultures of book production, and the role of books in Irish history, as well as some of the issues affecting the Irish book trade, including censorship and the competition faced by the country’s small publishers with larger and more established British firms. In addition to reading and book culture, the book analyses the financial and market factors governing the book trade, the reception of Irish books in Australia and the United States, and how the Irish book fares in the informatics age. Finally, it looks at the achievements of individual publishing houses in Ireland.
