Abstract

AbstractThis introductory chapter begins with a discussion of the situation in Rome after the Social War. The situation in which Rome found herself after the Social War was utterly different from that which she was in during the 4th and 3rd centuries, as was the scale of the enfranchisements. Moreover, the simple grant of citizenship could not mask wide differences in the cultural and political experiences of the peoples incorporated. The management of this new huge diversity of culture, language, tradition, outlook, and aspiration is examined. The problem of origins, municipalization, and studies on Italy are discussed.
