Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book looks at the subject in secondary and primary school, considering its development, its nature and its purpose in the school curriculum. It introduces design and technology as a subject in schools and provides general historical and current information about the subject, its origins and current curriculum. The book considers the place of values in design and technology education, design and technology opportunities for pupils post-16, and professional life beyond student teacher experience in a secondary school. Design and technology appeals to many pupils; when taught well it is interesting, challenging and fun. It allows pupils to develop knowledge, skills and values and prepares them well for citizenship, higher education and employment. Design and technology has the potential to connect with pupils’ lives, whatever their background or culture, to relate to their social, cultural and technical/technological interests.
