Introduction

Abstract

The scientific papers collected in this volume were presented at the Chapman Conference on El Niño: An International Symposium, held on October 27‐31, 1986 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The conference was organized by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) under a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), who also funded the travel for many of the U.S. participants. Travel for most of the participants from other countries was supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the South Pacific Permanent Commission (Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur, or CPPS). Local arrangements for the conference were provided for by the Instituto Nacional de Pesca del Ecuador (INPE) with funds provided by the IOC and AGU.
