Abstract

This introductory chapter specifies the purpose of the book as presenting a perspective on international social work research, issues involved in the conduct and utilization of international research, and examples of international research studies. It indicates how definitions of international social work and social work research can be merged to form a definition of international social work research, which is considered to be social work research that is relevant to international social work and that uses literature from and makes implications for two or more countries. The chapter indicates how social workers are involved in international activities and affected by globalization even if they practice only within their countries. A typology of international social work research is presented, consisting of supranational, intranational, and transnational research.
