Abstract

This chapter introduces the ethnicity, culture, and nationality of the Philippine Chinese, who are residents of the Philippines with Chinese ancestry. It explores how and why the Philippine Chinese became model Cold Warriors in correlation to their partnership with the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Philippine state in opposition. The KMT aimed to mobilize a deterritorialized Chinese nation and destroy Chinese communism in pursuit of a unified China under its leadership. However, the group had been unable to assert its dominance over foreign governments, such as the Philippines due to its shared sovereignty with Taipei. The chapter notes the intra-Asian anticommunist ecumene being composed of relationships between the Philippine Chinese, Nationalist China, and the Philippines. It covers how the Chinese adapted themselves to the postcolonial Philippines and forged for themselves suitable ideological identities.
