Abstract
The introduction provides an overview of Newman’s theory of doctrinal development as it appeared in his 1845 An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, as well as a brief exploration of major social factors surrounding its publication and early reception among Roman Catholics. The introduction also includes a detailed discussion of methodological issues relating to the problem of reception across languages, social networks and other types of divisions and media, and an overview of previous scholarship on the early influence of Newman’s theory of development. The section concludes with an outline of the three parts and seven chapters of the study.
