Abstract

The following introductory chapter reconstructs the conceptual framework of the book. In particular, I focus on the question of animal suffering as the cornerstone of our moral and philosophical tradition—an issue on which our understanding of human existence and, more generally, of life depend. Here I introduce the main theoretical challenge of the book: to think of the animal suffering as a deconstructive question not only of anthropocentrism, but first and foremost of the very category of “meaning”.
