Abstract

Abstract A fair and effective criminal justice system lies at the heart of human rights protection. There is no aspect of the investigation and prosecution of crime that does not engage key international human rights standards that protect and promote civil and political rights. It is no coincidence that the overwhelming majority of cases before international human rights courts and tribunals concern the investigation and prosecution of crime, and the right to a fair criminal trial remains the most litigated of all human rights. This book is designed for the busy practitioner who is aware of the relationship between human rights and criminal law and procedure, but who needs to be informed more extensively as well as practically, about the impact they have on each other. Each chapter, therefore, addresses the different aspects of the investigation and prosecution of crime, from surveillance operations to sentencing.
