Abstract

The introduction explains the purpose of this collection of essays. It is intended to enhance our knowledge of the Second World War by emphasizing the experiences of nation states that, at the time, were either colonies or independent ‘small power’ countries. The war experience of such states, the introduction states, was heavily marked by the actions and exactions of the ‘big power’ Allied and Axis belligerents. By looking at the war history of nations not usually in the limelight, the collection deepens awareness of the conflict’s globality. The introduction also examines the historiography that allows scholars to research the Second World War experience of former colonies and small power nations.
