Introduction

Abstract

This volume is the result of an invitation from Leonard Waks to me to solicit essays from leaders in the field of history of education about their personal and academic backgrounds and how they came to work in this field. It is the third in a series, preceded by volumes in philosophy of education and curriculum studies. Initially, like in the two predecessor volumes, the plan was to involve contributors from Great Britain, Canada, and Australia, as well as from the United States. The character of history of education as a field, however, made it more nationally distinct than the other fields.
