Abstract

The engagement of the church of England with British society is central to the way that this church has come to understand itself. The church of England has often seen itself as the conscience of society and has been looked to in this guise throughout history to a greater or lesser extent. The personal faith of leading politicians underpinned by a historic Judaeo-Christian influence on society has helped the church of England to influence British foreign policy and its international relations to some extent. This can be seen in how the Church has helped push development issues up the agenda of the British government. These policies are informed by a continuous debate between Church and society that, if it is to be sustained, needs the Church to maintain its confidence in the wealth of Christian tradition. By the Church’s presence amongst policy makers, practitioners and all those who are affected, it will have a direct impact upon British foreign policy.
