Abstract

This introduction uses an auto-theory approach to explore the impact of queer theory and queer history on the author’s gender transition. It explores hidden LGBTQ histories in the author’s own family, how queer theory shaped her coming out experience, and how oral histories with transgender women propelled her into her identity as a transgender woman. Meanwhile, the author introduces key concepts related to queer space and memory and draws upon literatures in public history, oral history, and urban history to introduce the book’s themes of remembrance and belonging. The introduction also sets the stage for the author’s arrival in Roanoke, Virginia, and the founding of the Southwest Virginia LGBTQ+ History Project.
