Abstract
This short introductory chapter defines the main focus and the outline of the book, exploring how different interpretations of nonverbal predicates can be accounted for in a system that maintains a single structure for predication. The different parts of the book are introduced, beginning with some general assumptions regarding predication, nonverbal stative predicates, and copular sentences, before moving on to the main theoretical discussion and a fine-grained typology of nonverbal predicates based on a three-way semantic distinction, based mainly on French. The final part offers further analyses of nonverbal predication in languages including Russian, Spanish, and Modern Irish.
