Abstract
The Introduction to Volume 3 covers the growth of Winnicott’s important clinical contributions to psychoanalysis, in particular the paper ‘Hate In the Counter Transference’, whose use of the emotional self of the analyst (as opposed to the analyst’s ‘neutrality’ at the disposal of the patient) is seen as innovative. Reference is made to a new semantics of aggression, the study of early infancy through the psychosis of adult analytic patients, mother-infant interactions, new definitions of ‘subject’ and ‘object’ in clinical work, unconscious clinical relationships, the phenomena of transitional objects, illusion and potential space, true and false self, authenticity, maturation, and integration by the infant.
