Abstract

Not all hydrocarbon provinces are influenced by salt tectonics. Judging by the level of interest and effort the seismic-imaging community has dedicated to imaging in the vicinity of and below salt structures, one might think subsalt imaging is the most important imaging challenge the industry faces. It certainly is an important challenge, and, because imaging around and below salt structures is so difficult yet so potentially rewarding, the magnitude of industry interest in subsalt imaging is, in the special-section editors' view, justified.
