Abstract
In the present issue of the Journal, the reader will notice a new section titled “Endoscopy and Procedures”. Members of our official societal partners, ESPGHAN and NASPGHAN, have long recognized the importance of endoscopy and other procedures to their clinical practice. These procedures help obtain critical diagnostic information and can be cornerstone in the treatment plans developed for our patients. Given the importance of endoscopy and procedures to our daily clinical practice, it is critical that we encourage and support the performance and publication of high-quality research in this discipline. We are excited to introduce this new section in JPGN and feel that the two original articles as well as the supplement included in our inaugural section provide perfect examples of how well-designed clinical trials and multicenter collaboratives can address important issues facing our endoscopy community. One of the driving objectives and visions of the Endoscopy and Procedures section is the dissemination of knowledge acquired through high-quality research. Although historically research related to endoscopy and procedures in children has been sparse, the landscape is finally changing, and newer technologies and devices are being introduced at a rapid pace in recent years. Though this is driven primarily by the need to diagnose and treat pathologies in adult populations, it has generated interests in studying these newer technologies in children and has also sparked interest in the pursuit of careers dedicated to the study and performance of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and procedures among our members. There has never been a better time to study how we perform, educate and advocate for procedures and new technologies in children. Moving forward, we hope investigators and clinicians will consider JPGN a welcome home for original articles related to all facets of endoscopy and procedures. In addition to creating this new section, the Journal has ensured there are editorial board members and associate editors on staff with dedicated interest in these specific areas to deliver a robust and timely peer review process. These team members will be working hard over the coming years to identify the best original research being presented at meetings and other venues in the hope of encouraging submission to JPGN. We envision filling this new section with pediatric endoscopy related research of the highest quality which ultimately should positively influence the quality of research submitted to all sections of the Journal. We hope you find this new section to be supportive, helpful, and informative in your pursuit of providing excellent care, educating your trainees, and advocating for tools to better treat your patients. As we strive to meet your needs as an audience, we would appreciate your input on the value of this section in the coming years.
