Abstract

Ecological or physiological chronobiologists are often faced with the statistical analysis of time series, in order to find significant rhythms in data series obtained at great pain and expense. The purpose of this paper is threefold: (1) we will show where the analysis of rhythms fits in the larger field of time series analysis; (2) we will brush over the spectrum of methods available for identifying rhythms; (3) and finally, we will expound on two methods especially designed for the analysis of short time series, which is the kind most chronobiologists are faced with.
