Introduction

In Western welfare state contexts, innovation is increasingly promoted as vital for addressing a range of societal problems. The aim of this special issue is to further develop research dialogues concerning public sector innovation and shed light on themes that have not yet been sufficiently addressed, such as critical examinations of the concept of public sector innovation and its performativity, critical discussions of how the phenomena can be studied, and critical explorations of the linkages between research and innovation The articles in this special issue contribute to illuminating how the policy and research discourse concerning public sector ii NJSR – Nordic Journal of Social Research Vol 12, 2021 Special issue: Public sector Innovation - Conceptual and Methodological Implications innovation contains blind spots and challenges, but they highlight the potential for developing future research avenues in this field.
