Abstract

The biotech and pharmaceutical industries are emerging as strong growth industries. While the basic mechanical seal has not changed significantly, there are design refinements that assist these industries in producing high-quality products. The two industries have some fundamental application differences. The pharmaceutical industry has a wide variety of applications similar to the chemical industry. The biotech industry appears to have comparatively mild operating conditions, but this does not necessarily mean that they are easier to seal. In fact, there are conditions and requirements that make it an interesting challenge.
