Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of hotels and home sharing, describing their contributions to the world’s economy. It also defines the terms used in this work, including “safety” and “security,” the key concepts that this brief examines. The central thesis of this work is set forth, which is that responsibility for safety and security in hotels is radically different from in home-sharing settings. Specifically, the responsibility that is largely placed on the corporate hotel shifts to the home-sharing hosts and guests, while counterintuitively the home-sharing company that sets up the transaction has no responsibility at all. Finally, this chapter sets forth the six primary questions that are answered in each of the chapters of this work: (1) What is home sharing in relation to the hospitality industry? (2) What do we learn from the safety and crime data on home shares? (3) Who has legal responsibility for safety and security in hotels versus home sharing? (4) What are contemporary safety and security practices used in hotels and home shares? (5) What does criminological theory suggest about sleeping away from home? And (6) what issues about home sharing has the advent of COVID-19 exposed?
