Abstract

With the maturity of multimedia techniques and the rapid development of telecommunication networks and services, the combination of multimedia and communications will become the key technology of future information and telecommunications. Telecommunication Laboratories (TL) keeps track of research directions in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and positions itself in promoting new techniques of combining multimedia and communications. In this situation, the goal is to develop new telecommunication services for multimedia, promote telecommunication networks and services, and help advance multimedia communication techniques for the domestic information and communication sectors. Given this research pursuit, this chapter focuses on the following items: the development of multimedia telecommunication services, ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) broadband experimental networks and their applications, intelligent input/output techniques and their associated multimedia applications, and the development of multimedia customer premises equipment.
